Southern California UNAC/UHCP membership voted overwhelmingly — 96% — authorizing a strike, if deemed necessary to settle the contract. The leadership of UNAC/UHCP has determined the time is now. UNAC/UHCP leadership notified Kaiser Permanente (KP) of our intent to strike at hundreds of KP locations across Southern California beginning November 15 at 7:00 a.m.

Thirty-one thousand employees would be part of the strike from all over Southern California.

Ninety-six percent of the Kaiser's union workers voted to strike if necessary. Serene Branson reports.

Represented by the Oregon Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals union, nearly 3,400 nurses and healthcare employees from Kaiser Permanente voted to authorize a strike. Don’t believe Kaiser’s story that a two-tier system won’t affect you. Everything we’ve fought for the past 50 years is at stake. Two-tier systems—like the one Kaiser Permanente has put on the table—are wage-cutting schemes that offer modest raises for current employees but slash the wages and benefits of future hires. Monica Samano, RN, from Kaiser Riverside, tells the story of her mom's experience with a two-tier system. "Once that two-tier system hit, it created an environment where . . . all the second tier people were coming in and they're the [new] majority. So the second tier started looking out for themselves and their own interests. It's really important to not get caught up in, 'Well, this isn't going to affect me because I'll be on the first tier.' Because it will. It's going to affect everyone. "To this day, she advises me: 'You guys fight for this. Don't let them do what they did to us. I didn't realize how this would affect my career. I didn't realize how this would affect the work environment and benefits now.'
